My first foray into VOIP -
I've recently purchased two PCI FXO cards based on the Ambient 3200 chipset (they're Digium clones) with the intention of setting up a VOIP gateway built around the open-source Asterisk IP PBX.
I like the idea that calls can be automatically sent out over the cheapest provider, whether it be an Internet provider, or your analogue lines.
I'm looking into getting a Grandstream Budgetone 101 IP phone to go with it, for $100, it seems like a pretty good option.
I'll update you as I get Asterisk going...

Update: I've realised that these cards aren't Austel certified, which means I would be risking a $10,000 fine if I was caught using it on Australian phone lines. I've been advised to get an ATA (Analogue To Digital Adaptor) and let Asterisk talk to that using SIP over ethernet. Sounds like that may be the way to go. So now I'm looking at getting a Sipura SPA-3000.
