Need Linux system-state backups? Mondo to the Rescue! -
Recently I've come across a fantastic package for Linux called Mondo Rescue. It's a series of scripts which let you take a snapshot of your system, and write it to a bootable cd, an iso file, you can even send it to another host across the network or store it on tape.
The bootable cd can bring your system back from bare metal in less than 20 minutes (depending on the size of the image). And if you install petris (a free tetris clone) you can even play it while mondo restores your system.
Mondo is great for backing up a system state, and I still use conventional media for data, so if I exclude all the data from the mondo image, I can generally fit a full server system on one cd.
Another great thing about mondo is that it is completely scriptable; you can even run it from your crontab and have it burn a cd every night.
Give it a whirl, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.
